What do you think: Is doubt the enemy of faith? Is doubt a spiritually destructive force that separates us from God? Were you taught that doubting is a personal spiritual failure? (I was.)
 
To have doubts and questions about faith is unsettling, isn’t it? We can wonder if something is wrong with us - are we just faking it? are we foolish? do we need remedial Sunday School? or just to pray harder? In my years as a church leader, I have noticed that people who live with doubts about Jesus and the resurrection can live in a silent desperation, because doubt in the church is treated almost like a leprosy of the soul. In the cross, I do not see a vindictive God who is satisfied by the blood of the pure sacrifice. I see a God who willingly sacrifices all of himself, in opposition to the violence which we demand. Me gusta el Domingo de Ramos. En una mañana de domingo, que es tan bueno estar con la comunidad parroquial, a cantar hosanna, y para celebrar la alegría de un nuevo día. Nuestros palmas olor fresco y fresco y verde, como la primavera. Al mismo tiempo, recordamos el maravilloso saludo, exuberante pueblo de Jerusalén dieron a Jesús cuando llegó a las puertas de la ciudad hace mucho tiempo. Aplaudieron y gritaron "hosanna", que significa "sálvanos ahora, Señor." Tiraron sus mantos y ramas de palma a través de su ruta para que el polvo no conseguiría revuelto y cubrirlo. Fue una bienvenida real. Ellos eran la esperanza de un nuevo día en un sentido político, y ellos querían que su Mesías, Jesús, para ser su rey. Sermon for March 29, 2015 (Palm Sunday)

The distance we cover during our procession with the palms is not a long one, at least not physically. And it really is rather fun, to walk out of the parish hall and into the church, waving our palm branches in the air and then beginning to sing our hosannas. On a Sunday morning, it is so good to be with the parish community and to celebrate the joy of a new day. Our palms smell fresh and cool and green, like spring. At the same time, we remember the wonderful, exuberant greeting the people of Jerusalem gave to Jesus when he arrived at the city gates so long ago. They cheered and shouted “hosanna” or “save us now, Lord.” They threw their cloaks and palm branches across his path so the dust would not get churned up and cover him. It was a royal welcome. They were hoping for a new day in a political sense, and they wanted their Messiah, Jesus, to be their king. When we go home, we remember that we, too, were a part of this royal welcome. Queremos ver a Jesus

La semana pasada, mi hijo notó que a medida que la nieve se derritió, el remanente del césped debajo de él parecía muerto. Él no me creyó cuando le sugerí que toda la nieve era fertilizante natural. Podía ver la hierba, marchitas y amarillentas. De verdad, mamá, parece muerto. Si el pequeño glaciar en nuestro patio delantero nunca se derrite completamente, confío en que el césped volverá a algo verde y de vivir. Ese es el patrón de la creación. Algunos evangelios son más fáciles de entender que otras. ¿Te diste cuenta de la desconexión entre la solicitud de los griegos y la respuesta de Jesús en el pasaje del evangelio de hoy? Una parte de mí espera que el editor dejó un par de frases. Señor, queremos ver a Jesús. En la mayoría de los domingos, también podríamos estar listos para decir esto, junto con los griegos. We want to see Jesus

Sermon for March 22, 2015 (Fifth Sunday in Lent)
Rev. Amy Welin: Late last week, my son noticed that as the snow melted, the remnant of the lawn beneath it looked dead. He did not believe me when I suggested that all the snow was nature’s fertilizer. He could see the wilted, yellowed grass. Really, mom, it looks dead. If the small glacier on our front yard ever melts completely, I trust that the lawn will return to something green and living. That is the pattern of creation. Some gospels are easier to work with than others. Did you notice the disconnect between the inquiry of the Greeks and Jesus’ response in today’s gospel passage? Part of me hopes that the editor left out a couple of sentences. Sir we want to see Jesus. On most Sundays, we also might be ready to say that along with the Greeks. We want help.
