During supper with his closest friends, knowing that he will die soon, Jesus decides to wash their feet.

Do you know that the Gospel of John is the only gospel that includes this story?

Do you know that this is the only direct command of Jesus (called a dominical command) that we exercise each year, but we have not made into a sacrament?

Why do we wash feet in the church service on Maundy Thursday? It is so often difficult to get people to come forward. There are a hundred excuses. My ugly feet? At the end of the day, my feet are smelly. I hate taking off my shoes and socks. I need a pedicure.

To allow someone to wash our feet means that we allow ourselves to be open and vulnerable.

We chant a hymn to diminish the discomfort. If we can focus on the words and melody of the chant, we are less anxious. And still there are those awkward moments when the priest wonders if anyone will come forward.

There are many reasons that Jesus insists that Peter allow him to wash his feet. It is a symbolic cleansing of sins. An act of humility. An embodiment of service.

When we wash feet in church, it is not about the priest being like Jesus. It is not about the children or the vestry or the courageous few who come forward to take on the role of Peter. It is not about watching a memorial of Jesus’ humility. It may not even be only about emphasizing the necessity of Christian service.

Washing feet is about allowing the Christ in each other to touch our feet.

Not all of us want that. And I think that there is more to it than embarrassment about our feet.

To allow Christ to cleanse our feet is to remove everything that prevents us from using our feet to follow him. To scrub away our insecurities, to wash away our weariness, to buff off our sin and bitterness. We will be clean, and we will have no more excuses.

Do you want to be part of the people who follow Jesus?

Please allow him to wash away the obstacles.
